this so-called fiscal cliff? >> that's a really good question. it's one of the reasons i'm pretty excited about the fact we already acted. we acted several months ago to extend the tax cuts for all americans. we don't have to go over the cliff. there is a piece of legislation that has passed house, which is good-- >> schieffer: well, craig shirley, who is a republican operative tauthor, observer, was quoted as saying if we were in a parliamentary system, what happened to speaker boehner would have been viewed as a vote of no confidence. do you think speaker boehner ought to step aside and let somebody else try to get this done? >> speaker boehner will be the speaker next year, without any question. the onus right now is on senator reid and the president to come up with a solution, make it a piece of legislation, pass it through the senate, present it to the house, and let's get back to the bargaining table. the american people deserve for both houses to do something and ask the president to sign it. >> schieffer: well, are you saying that the house, speaker boehner, should take no respons

the fiscal cliff deadline when income tax cuts and payroll tax cuts are set to expire, $110 billion worth of spending cuts kick in, and two million jobless americans lose their unemployment benefits. for the first time, leader reid said today that it looks like the nation is going to go over the fiscal cliff, but that may just have been bluster, jeff, to try to put more pressure on republicans. >> glor: so, nancy, the house coming back on sunday. is that a good sign? >> reporter: well, it is in the sense that if the senate does manage to pass something, the house would be here to vote on it, as well. originally, speaker boehner had told his members that he would give them 48 hours' notice if they were needed back here at the capitol, but there was a recognition, i think, that it just looked bad for the house to be gone when we were so close to the fiscal cliff deadline. >> glor: nancy cordes, thank you. major garrett has been following developments at the white house. major, what is the president's next move? >> reporter: it is not a breakthrough but it is a glimmer of hope. officials tel

christmas many americans have lingering financial worries. we know there's that fiscal cliff hovering over us and we're about to go over the edge but right now no one in washington is really doing anything about it. >> no, on the christmas break. edward lawrence is in washington, d.c. this morning with more on what lies ahead in the days to come. so edward i guess we won't really see any action until at least thursday? is that right? >> reporter: yeah we won't see action until thursday because the senate doesn't get back into session until thursday at the moment the capitol is deserved. so is the white house, as you know president obama is in hawaii on his annual vacation. that he has every year here. now he spent christmas eve playing golf and working out at a local marine base out there. he also has another golf round planned again for today. the talks between the president and the house have broken down on this fiscal cliff there are to try and avoid the deadline that's coming up. on thursday when the senate comes back into session most of the house of representatives will also be back
